[Answer] Should You Confess to Someone You Really Like?

There are two kinds of regret. One is the disappointment of trying and failing to win the other person’s acceptance; the other is the sadness, after time has moved on, of words that were never spoken. The first kind of regret cannot be predicted, but the second is one we can choose.

If the purpose of being friends with someone is only to conceal romantic feelings, then whether you confess or not, that relationship is unlikely to last. Once they successfully end up with someone else, if regret and jealousy do not drown the friendship that merely cloaks your love, then the only remaining possibility is that your feelings were never all that deep to begin with.

But if your affection grew naturally from a long-standing friendship, then a confession will either stir the same feelings in the other person’s heart, or it should at least be met with a grateful and gentle refusal. And if, because of that, the two of you can no longer return to being friends, then the reliability of that friendship is itself open to question.

So unless there is some compelling reason not to, I think love should be spoken. After all, life gives us only so much time. And after all, it is not often that we meet someone worthy of setting aside our pride and lowering ourselves into the dust just to confess our feelings.
