Recently, Xi’an has once again started strictly punishing taxi drivers who violate regulations. I don’t think this approach can fundamentally solve the problems facing Xi’an’s taxi industry. At its core, the problems of taxi drivers reflect the harmful influence and pressure that local hidden interest groups exert on the entire sector. Drivers are simply the very last link in the chain.
Of course, ever since ride-hailing services appeared, I have basically stopped taking taxis in Xi’an. Refusing passengers is quite common among drivers, and the service attitude is often poor. But to some extent, I can understand why.
The heavy management fees imposed on taxi drivers leave them with few better options. That is why I think harshly punishing drivers only makes things worse for the taxi industry as a whole. It pushes out drivers who still have other choices, while those who remain can only continue struggling at an even lower level.
To truly solve the problem, we have to start with the fundamentals of the taxi industry itself. All taxi management companies should reduce the fees they charge drivers, improve service standards, and raise service awareness so that management actually serves a real purpose. If these companies cannot fulfill a meaningful management role, then what is the point of having them at all? Just to continue dividing up profits and exploiting taxi drivers?
