[Answer] Synology’s Built-in Free Domain and DDNS?
[Answer] Synology’s Built-in Free Domain and DDNS?
In general, a self-hosted Synology server often does not have a fixed IP address (specifically, a public IP address. If there is no public IP at all, you may need to use solutions such as NAT traversal or similar methods to access the Synology server from outside the local network). Because of this, it usually relies on Dynamic DNS (DDNS) to keep the domain name updated. That way, when the external IP address changes, the DDNS service can promptly point the domain name to the new IP address.
However, Synology’s built-in DDNS appears to update only about once every 24 hours by default. This means that if your ISP changes your IP address, the server may become unreachable for a long period of time. To solve this problem, you can use Synology’s built-in Task Scheduler to run DDNS updates at regular intervals, which helps reduce downtime when the server’s external IP changes.
In the DSM 7.0 Control Panel, open Task Scheduler and choose to create a new task. The task name can be anything you like; here, you can use DDNS update. Make sure to switch the user to root, as shown below.
Under the Schedule tab, choose how often the task should run. To increase the DDNS update frequency, you can set it to run every 30 minutes, or every 1–2 hours, so the IP address can be updated in time.
In Task Settings, under the user-defined script section, enter the following command. You can also provide an email address so the administrator will be notified if an error occurs during execution.
synonet --dns update
