[Answer] What things are often believed to be illegal but are actually legal?

I’ve been seeing this question a lot over the past few days. Personally, I feel that the law in China is basically so all-encompassing that, most of the time, it’s not that something seems illegal but is actually legal — it’s that you think something is no problem, but in fact it has already crossed a legal line. Examples of the reverse are quite rare.

That said, even though the laws are written very strictly, they are not necessarily enforced consistently. As a result, many people remain in a technically illegal state all the time. When law enforcement does nothing, nothing happens; but once they really decide to act, they can usually find a legal basis to go after almost anyone. That is precisely why we ended up with the absurd case of the elderly woman at an amusement-park air-gun stall being sentenced. According to the law, it really was illegal. Even among children’s toy guns, a large number technically fall into the illegal category. But that only shows that the law itself has areas that are poorly designed or incomplete.
