For female users, the laptops they choose are generally more cost-effective overall (except for those using Macs), because in most cases they tend to play fewer games than male users. And with the current budget, there is actually a fairly wide range of mid-range laptops to choose from. Since an automation major may involve some programming and drawing work, there are still certain performance requirements. At the same time, for female users, portability and appearance may also be very important. (That said, girls’ sense of aesthetics and feel may be vastly different from that of a middle-aged man like me, so I can only do my best.)
If we look purely at looks and portability, then a thin-and-light laptop would be the right choice. In terms of appearance, Huawei’s MateBook, Honor’s MagicBook, Xiaomi’s Air, ASUS’s A-series, Acer’s Swift, and HP’s War 66 are all decent options, and that is also the order in which I would recommend them. Although Huawei has not been in the laptop market for very long, the word-of-mouth from friends around me has been quite good. As for Xiaomi, no one around me uses one, but the whole lineup imitates Apple’s style, so at least in terms of looks, it passes. ASUS’s A-series and Acer’s Swift get mixed reviews, but to some extent that also shows they are fairly popular, and among these models they offer the best value for money at a similar performance level. Lastly, there are traditional but declining brands like HP (or Dell): they lack innovation while also failing to lower prices, so I basically do not recommend them.
From the hardware perspective, an 8th-generation i5 processor and MX150 dedicated graphics are basically the highest configuration you can get within this budget. Personally, unless you plan to run virtual machines and similar workloads, I do not think there is much need to go for an i7. Memory should be at least 8GB, and 16GB would be better. As for storage, an SSD is of course necessary. 256GB is barely enough, while 512GB would be better, though it may push you over budget.
Finally, regarding screen size: if you are a petite girl, then 13.3 inches is basically the upper limit. In that case, Huawei would no longer be an option (it would exceed the budget by too much), and you could consider the Xiaomi Air, ASUS A-series, or Acer Swift instead. If you are not especially petite, then a narrow-bezel 14-inch laptop should feel about the same as a 13-inch one in actual use and would be perfectly sufficient, so you could choose the MagicBook or the other options mentioned afterward. If you are willing to accept a larger size (and do not need to carry it around too often, since larger models are usually more cost-effective), then with this budget you could get a 15.6-inch MateBook.
