One bitterly cold winter night in the north, after evening self-study, I ran into her as I was leaving campus. Back then, she could only be counted as a good friend.

She said, “Look at you, you’re freezing. Your lips are all dry and cracked. Want me to put some lip balm on them?”

At the time, I thought she was going to do it in that flirtatious Cecilia Cheung-to-Stephen Chow movie way—you know, Liu Piaopiao putting lip balm on Yin Tianchou. (Well, actually King of Comedy hadn’t even come out yet back then, so those two characters didn’t exist yet. I’m getting my timelines mixed up.) Anyway, I happily agreed.

What I didn’t expect was that she really pulled a tube of lip balm out of her pocket and started applying it for me. As she did, she wore a very serious expression and said that this kind of transparent lip balm was moisturizing, colorless, and pretty good.

It wasn’t until I got back to the dorm, got mercilessly roasted by everyone, and looked in the mirror—only to discover that my lips had been painted a girlish pink, and that I wanted to crawl into a hole but couldn’t—that I realized I’d been pranked.

More than 20 years after we met, and over 10 years into our marriage, she finally told me the full story behind it one day. After buying that lip balm, she thought the color looked especially ridiculous and was really annoyed about it, so she wanted to find some outlet for her frustration. I just happened to be the specific person passing by at that specific moment, and so I became the target of her indiscriminate prank...

Well, all right, maybe this doesn’t exactly count as a story about teasing your boyfriend. But it is one little episode in a long, long love story.
