Your language skills must be solid. Although language is just a tool, it is the foundation. If your language ability is weak, working in foreign trade will be much more difficult. Written communication online is relatively easier, but face-to-face conversations or phone calls can become a major problem if you cannot communicate smoothly. The first time I spoke with people from the Middle East in person, I completely froze and felt like I had studied a foreign language for nothing. Their accents were so strong that I could barely understand anything. So I think the first thing to do is to keep strengthening your language skills, especially your listening ability and vocabulary.
Still, language comes first. Foreign trade also varies by industry, and each industry has its own specialized terminology. So you need to be targeted in your preparation and try to learn the technical terms related to your field. Ideally, you should read one or two professional books about the industry so you do not come across as a complete outsider.
Even if you do not yet have hands-on experience, you should still learn some of the practical knowledge and basic concepts of foreign trade. You should also understand the meanings of common technical terms and abbreviations, so that you are not completely lost during communication.
