Smart energy is a relatively new concept that has emerged in recent years. In 2009, the international academic community, including experts from IBM, proposed that interconnected technologies would transform the way the entire world operates, affecting the work and daily lives of billions of people. As a result, scholars began advocating the idea of “building a Smarter Planet,” introducing concepts such as smart airports, smart banks, smart railways, smart cities, smart power plants, smart grids, and smart energy. This marked the beginning of the smart energy concept.
They also proposed forming the so-called “Internet of Things” through universal connectivity, and integrating it through supercomputers and cloud computing, enabling humanity to manage production and daily life in a more refined and dynamic way, ultimately achieving a globally “smart” state: “Internet + Internet of Things = a Smarter Planet.”
Smart energy refers to the integration of energy efficiency technologies with intelligent technologies. It will drive transformation in the energy industry and promote energy conservation in China’s building sector. More importantly, smart energy will also advance China’s ecological civilization efforts.
In 2016, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Development of 'Internet Plus' Smart Energy," outlining three major aspects: overall principles, key tasks, and implementation measures. It also provided guidance for launching and improving smart energy initiatives across different regions. This shows that the country places great importance on smart energy.
Guided by the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Development of 'Internet Plus' Smart Energy," smart energy innovation aims to advance the development of China’s smart energy industry. Centered on the theme of “The Intelligent Era: New Progress, New Trends, New Measures,” it emphasizes an international perspective and builds communication platforms. The purpose is to foster discussion and promote new models of cooperation, support the development of China’s international smart energy industry and project partnerships, and encourage regional economic growth and industrial restructuring.
It is clear that the momentum of smart energy development in China is becoming increasingly strong. And this is not limited to China—worldwide, the pace and prospects of smart energy development are exponential, with enormous room for growth. The foundation of smart energy development is energy, and the driving force behind it is technology. We have always attached great importance to the development of the smart energy industry. At present, relying on a solid energy industry foundation and the Beijing-Tianjin Zhongguancun development platform, efforts are being made to vigorously promote smart energy research, development, and application; attract top industry talent, technology, and other innovative resources; and build an “Internet Plus Energy” industrial ecosystem.
